Mexico's president announces $1B Tesla Manufacturing Plant Planned For Mexico Will Probably Build SUVs.
What will the factory produce? Obrador didn't reveal details other than to indicate it would bring "many, many jobs" to Mexico, Reuters reported, but added that other unnamed Mexican officials indicated it would produce a vehicle, likely an SUV. Tesla produces the Model X and Model Y SUVs currently. Reuters' sources indicate the initial deal is valued at roughly $1 billion and could later expand to as much as 10 times that amount at some point in the future.
As Reuters notes, EVs produced in North America—including Canada and Mexico—qualify for the tax credits implemented by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Tesla's Mexico plant will join its auto manufacturing facilities in California, Texas, Germany, China—as well as its gigafactories in Nevada and New York that produce components and batteries.
